The global 3D printing market size is anticipated to reach USD 76.17 billion by 2030, advancing at a substantial CAGR of 20.8% during the forecast period. 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), involves the successive layer addition of materials in a number of 2D shapes through the use of an additive process, in order to construct a three-dimensional object. This process is inherently different from the subtractive production technique, wherein a block of material is taken and the desired object is formed by removing unnecessary layers.

3D printing is utilized across various sectors that include healthcare, energy and power, automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics. Besides these, it is also used in crafting fashion accessories and jewelry, as well as in dentistry to form crowns, along with other permanent restoration solutions. 3D printing has evolved from just being a prototyping tool to becoming a significant part of the fabrication process. This has been possible due to the continued advancements being made in the material composition space that includes various innovative applications of metals and polymers.

Taking into account the vast potential in the 3D printing space, governments across the globe have been investing heavily in the research and development of 3D printing. For instance, the Catapult program in the U.K. helped add more than USD 900 million in 2018 in the region’s manufacturing sector, and as of mid-2022, has helped strengthen the functioning of more than 9000 small and medium enterprises. Another example is Germany, which has transitioned to factory production lines and made additive manufacturing and conventional techniques complimentary. The IDAM project, launched in 2020 with a funding of over USD 10 million, has helped BMW in launching its AM production line for the 3D printing of 50,000 metal auto components annually.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a significant enabler of the 3D printing industry. Although during the early phase of the pandemic, there was a significant impact on the production of 3D printing manufacturers, along with a halt in 3D printing production, the shortage of medical supplies helped in highlighting the importance of this sector. According to the U.S. FDA, the production of hospital equipment and supplies such as face shields and masks helped address medical supply gaps and shortages, and this holds true for the healthcare sector across the globe. A recent instance of the utilization of 3D printing for combating the pandemic involves the delivery of 1 million nasopharyngeal (NP) testing swabs that are 3D printed by Structo, a Singapore-based 3D printing company. These swabs have been developed in collaboration with healthcare authorities and professionals in Singapore.
