Glass ionomer cement is a tooth colored material, introduced by Wilson and Kent. Material was based on reaction between silicate glass powder & polyacrylic acid. They bond chemically to tooth structure & release fluoride for comparatively long period.It consists of powdered fluoroaluminosilicate glass and a polyalkenoic acid. Polyacrylic acid is often merged into the powder in its dehydrated form, leaving the liquid to consist of water or an aqueous solution of tartaric acid and others. They have several unique properties, inclusive of biological compatibility, adhesion to moist tooth structure, and anti-carcinogenic properties owing to their fluoride release.Glass ionomer sealants do prevent caries through a steady fluoride release over the period of time and the fissures are found to be more resistant to demineralization, even after the visible loss of sealant material. Prior to procedures, starter materials with respect to glass ionomers are supplied either as a powder mixed with water or as a powder and liquid. A mixed form of these materials could be provided in an encapsulated form.
