Industry Insights

The global anti-pollution mask market size was worth USD 2.7 billion for the year 2019. The increasing rate of pollution globally has led to the need for air purifying products for occupational and personal purposes. The number of people suffering from respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer, and COPD has increased due to the alarming rate of pollution which has further propelled the demand for this product. Further, the recent outbreak of coronavirus has led to a rise in demand for both reusable and disposable anti-pollution masks across the globe.

Anti-pollution masks safeguard the wearers against various pollutants present in the air. Users are advised to buy a well-fitted mask of accurate size covering the mouth, chin, and nose so that no gaps remain. Masks with irregular shapes result in leakages or might have utilized their filtering capacity proving them to be ineffective.

U.S. anti-pollution mask market

Amid increasing demand and shortage, several manufacturers have ramped up their production to meet the demand, this, in turn, has contributed to the growth of the market.

The rising urbanization coupled with industrialization in countries like India and China resulting in alarming pollution levels. To safeguard the population, the industrial sector solicits strict government laws for workers in factories, construction sites, and offices. The penetration of the e-commerce sector with players like Alibaba, Snapdeal, and Amazon is expected to have a positive impact on the sales of anti-pollution masks over the forecast period.

Companies are focusing on launching innovative products to cater to customer preferences. For example, Clean Air, Store, in December 2017, introduced the RespoKare Mask that contains an in-built pollution indicator to report the NO2 level of gas exposed to the wearer.

Product Insights

Based on the product, the disposable mask segment held the largest share of over 53% in 2019. The increasing pollution threats around the world have forged the government to apply strict regulations relating to pollution control and provide effective solutions. Disposable masks are produced using low-cost viable materials that contain multiple sheets of non-woven fabric. The layers offer liquid resistance and cover the face against perspiration, saliva, and facial hair. The other sheets are manufactured using melt brown, liquid-resistant, and non-woven polypropylene. The layers restrict the entrance of bacteria, contaminants, and body fluids into the mask. However, the disposable masks are less durable sufficing for over months to a few years.

The reusable masks segment is predicted to register a CAGR of 30.2% from 2020 to 2027. These masks are relatively more expensive but long-lasting as compared to disposable masks. These contain changeable filters and a layer of activated carbon. The filters need to be changed within 3-4 days. The manufacturers provide a high degree of importance to product innovation to adhere to customer preferences. For example, HEALTH INNOVATIVE, in May 2017, introduced the first-ever invisible anti-pollution nose mask that consists of advanced quality non-filer cloth of polyester. The mask provides a 99.5% pollution and pollen filtration rate and additional safeguard against PM2.5, airborne viruses, and other particulates. Furthermore, the mask has gained popularity for its prevention against asthma, bronchitis, allergies, and other respiratory problems.

Distribution channel Insights

The offline channel of distribution accounted for the anti-pollution mask market share of over 64% in 2019. The increased penetration of supermarkets, specialty stores, and hypermarkets has boosted the segment. Buyers are given the advantage of physically verifying the products based on their packaging and make informed decisions while purchasing as per their requirements. Material, fit, and size are some of the common criteria that the customers adhere to while purchasing at offline stores.

Global anti-pollution mask market

The online channel is expected to register a CAGR of 30.3% over the forecast period due to the rising trend of shopping from online portals. The shifting consumer preference for online shopping is attributed to its benefits like reviews, discounts, offers, and product details. Moreover, customers often purchase branded products from this segment further driving the online channel of distribution.

Regional Insights

The Asia Pacific held the largest anti-pollution mask market share of 33.0% in 2019. The rise in pollution levels in this region has led to toxic and hazardous air quality in countries like India and China which has propelled the demand for these masks. As stated by the WHO, in 2015, India and China accounted for 1.1 million deaths due to air pollution which is 50% of the deaths globally 2015. As per a report by Greenpeace in 2017, India registered 1.2 million deaths due to air pollution every year. The Chinese and Indian governments have taken various measures to overcome the environmental challenges; these consist of emission-reducing converters for automobiles and a standardized air quality rating response system.

North America has observed a surging demand for anti-pollution masks due to the rising awareness relating to pollution and its effects on health among the population. The American government has forged strict regulations to upgrade air quality standards. The Environmental Protection Agency passed The Clean Air Act in 1970, which is in relation to creating national air quality standards. The major purpose of this act is to reduce infant mortality rates by the reduction of the level of sulfur dioxide and various pollutants.

Impact of COVID-19

The COVID-19 outbreak has triggered the demand for the face mask. Following the World Health Organization guidelines that emphasized the use of masks in public places, consumer spending on the mask and personal protective equipment has increased significantly. Face masks are known to protect individuals from the risk of contamination of the virus. The rise in demand for masks has led to the shortage, in turn, manufacturers have ramped up their production facilities to cater to the growing demand.
