The global vibration plastic welder market, on the basis of geography, is segmented into Europe, Latin America, North America, Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa. Linear vibration welding physically moves one of two parts horizontally under pressure, creating heat through surface friction that melts and welds the parts together. Compared to ultrasonic welding, vibration welding operates at much lower frequencies, higher amplitudes and much greater clamping force.

Linear vibration welding is designated with electromagnetic heads that eliminate wear and lubrication associated with bearing surfaces.Vibration welding integrates the plastics parts against each other at a chosen frequency, amplitude and pressure resulting into frictional heating of the surfaces, affecting the polymer to melt at the interface. The molten polymer flows out of the weld-zone giving rise to flash. When vibration stops the weld cools down and solidifies. Vibration welding has the advantage that the polymer melts at the interface is not exposed to open air which can be important for materials that are susceptible to thermo-oxidative degradation.

As the process starts, the parts to be joined are brought into contact under an applied load. Secondly, one of the parts is vibrated in a linear reciprocating motion whilst the other is held stationary. This generates frictional heat at the joint line and causes local melting and some displacement of material into the weld flash. Finally, vibration is stopped, the parts are aligned and the joint is allowed to cool under load to consolidate the weld.

Vibration welding is also known as linear friction welding andis a commercially used process that can be applied to almost any thermoplastic material. The automotive industry is a major user and applications include bumpers, fuel tanks, engine air intake manifolds and other under-bonnet components.
